At just a 1.5-hour drive from Hamilton, Rotorua makes for the perfect weekend trip out of town. But before you reach your destination, there’s plenty to do in between. You’ll find some of the North Island’s best views and attractions in the heart of the Waikato Region.

Most of the locations in this guide only add an extra 20 minutes or so to your journey. If you just want to take a quick rest stop, the little town of Tīrau is halfway between Hamilton and Rotorua.

InterCity runs Hamilton to Rotorua bus services daily. Direct bus services depart from the Hamilton Travel Centre and arrive at the i-SITE in central Rotorua.

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, you won’t want to miss a guided tour through the Shire and Green Dragon Inn! Hobbiton is located just 15 minutes off State Highway 1, though you’ll need to book early—this is one of the most popular attractions on the way from Hamilton to Rotorua.

Tīrau Big Dog and Sheep

Stop at this quirky roadside landmark for a fun photo op on your way from Hamilton to Rotorua. Tīrau is known for its corrugated iron creations, and its white dog (information centre) and sheep (cafe and SPCA op shop) are the biggest!

Halfway between Hamilton and Rotorua, this pest-proof eco-sanctuary is home to many of New Zealand’s endangered native species. Look out for birds like the kākāpō and takahē as you explore the trails.

Arapuni Suspension Bridge

Cross the Arapuni Suspension Bridge over the Waikato River, witnessing the rushing green waters below and densely packed bush ahead. On your way back, you’ll get a great view of the historic Arapuni Hydro Power Station at work. Hold onto the rails while you’re enjoying the views, as this bridge can sway a bit when the wind picks up!

Te Waihou Walkway (Blue Spring)
