Cloudy Night Stargazing

Cloudy Night Stargazing
Skyline Rotorua Indoor Stargazing Setup.

While Skyline Rotorua is one of the top eight locations in New Zealand for stargazing, there are nights when the cloud cover means stargazing outside isn’t possible.

Operating from Skyline’s impressive cedar wood observatory on the side of Mount Ngongotaha, Skyline’s cloudy night stargazing will have you settled inside with a hot chocolate and woollen blanket to enjoy an enlightening multimedia presentation.

You will be toured through the night sky, where guides will share their vast knowledge from the basics of astronomy to some of the more unbelievable realities about outer space, as well as traditional narratives from our Māori ancestors.

Featuring full-colour satellite images of deep space and similar fascinating and informative content as the outdoor tour, photography and videography of some of Rotorua’s iconic attractions against the night sky will leave you in awe.

A behind-the-scenes tour of the observatory is also a must, where you’ll encounter the observatory's most impressive telescope, known as “The Don,” weighing over 100kg and is one of only two confirmed in New Zealand.

The stargazing experience begins with a Gondola ride to the top of Skyline Rotorua, where you will be greeted by one of our knowledgeable stargazing guides.

Come dressed warm and for a light walk to the observatory.
