Stargazing in Queenstown

Explore Our Galaxy

Journey into the hidden world of the Southern night sky with our awe-inspiring Stargazing tour, only a short Gondola ride from the heart of Queenstown!

On clear nights, our knowledgeable stargazing guides will lead you up Bob’s Peak to a specially-constructed platform high above the Skyline complex, allowing for an unbelievably clear view of the night sky. Away from light pollution, high powered telescopes reveal stunning sights not visible to the naked eye. Some highlights of the tour are:

  • Learn to navigate using the iconic Southern Cross.
  • Explore the Milky Way and spot satellites and shooting stars.
  • Be captivated by the wonders that make up our galaxy while looking at stars, clusters and nebulae through state of the art 11” Celestron telescopes.
  • When visible, be amazed by the sight of other planets and galaxies.

After the 60-minute tour (approximately) you're welcome to stay longer and enjoy a complimentary cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine in our Stratosfare Bar.

Our Stargazing tour is weather dependent. In case the conditions are unsuitable for the outdoor experience, we will offer you the option to book for a tour at a later date (subject to availability) or receive a refund for the experience.

A truly unique and memorable experience, Skyline Queenstown’s Stargazing tour is a must-do.

Tour Information

IMPORTANT

  • Always wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes! We will provide you with a Canada Goose Down Jacket to help keep you cosy and warm, however, temperatures can drop well below 0°C, so hat and gloves are highly recommended.
  • How often do tours run?

Stargazing tours run on a weekly basis and you’ll need to allow around 2 hours, including the Gondola ride time for your Stargazing tour. Arrive at the base of the Gondola at least 30 minutes before the start of the tour or dinner. Session times do vary as sunset times change regularly. Check out the full Stargazing Timetable for opening dates.

  • Are reservations required?

Yes, spaces are limited to 22 people each tour. So it is highly recommended reserving a spot on the Stargazing tour you wish to attend.

Check availability and buy your tickets here.

  • Do children pay?

We offer reduced child rates for those aged between 5 and 14 years old. Infants of 4 years old and under can go on the tour Free of Charge.

However, the tour is not recommended for small children.

  • How big are the groups?

Tours will run with groups of up to 22 people and minimum numbers may apply for some sessions. All of our Stargazing tours can be tailored to suit individual groups and knowledge levels and each session will be lead by one of our experienced Stargazing guides.

  • What happens if the weather does not permit the running of the outdoor tour?

Our Stargazing guides keep a close eye on the weather and will make a decision during the day to run the tour or not. If weather conditions are unsuitable to run the tour, you will have the option to:

    • Re-book for another date where space is available.
    • Take a full refund for the Stargazing tour.
  • What should I wear?

We provide complimentary use of the world's leading extreme outerwear, Canada Goose down jackets. Even so, come dressed for a light walk and for being outside. We’re in an alpine location and the tour is over 750 metres above sea level, so warm clothing, comfortable walking shoes, hat and gloves are highly recommended.

  • What languages are offered on the Stargazing tours?

We are currently running our English speaking tours only.

  • When will I find out if the outdoor tour will take place or not?

Unfortunately, in Queenstown's alpine environment, we can expect ever-changing and unpredictable weather throughout the year. Your tour guide will made the decision to run the Stargazing Tour on the day of the tour. If conditions are deemed unsuitable, you will be contacted to re-book or get a refund for your Stargazing Tour.

  • Can I cancel my booking?

Stargazing bookings can be cancelled without penalty up until 24 hours of the tour time. Refunds are not payable if you cancel within 24 hours of your booked tour, and the tour is expected to go ahead. If weather conditions are unsuitable to run the tour, you will have the option to:

    • Re-book for another date where space is available.
    • Take a full refund for the Stargazing tour.
