Did you know? Interesting space facts revealed!

Posted on Wednesday, 4 November 2015

During our Stargazing Tours in Skyline Queenstown our professional guides say they most enjoy the limitless ‘Any questions?’ section of our tours. Our guides really don’t like to be asked anything they don’t already know so they spend hours upon hours doing research. This feat, as you may imagine, is what could fittingly be termed as an astronomical task!

Just for fun, we asked our professional guides to put together a list of the most interesting and bizarre facts they could think of and here is what they came up with. We loved their list so much we decided to share it.

Warning: your mind is about to be boggled!

  • Space is actually not that far away, if you drove your car upwards for 1 hour you’d be there.

  • The Earth could fit inside the Sun over 1 million times.

  • Footprints left behind by astronauts on the moon will stay there forever as there is no wind to blow them away.

  • Venus, not Mercury, is the hottest planet in our solar system with a surface temperature of over 450 degrees Celsius.

  • Saturn isn't the only ringed planet, other gas giants such as Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus also have rings, just a little less obvious.

  • If you put Saturn in water it would float.

  • Astronomers changed the definition of a planet in 2006 meaning that Pluto has been demoted to a dwarf planet.

  • Because of lower gravity, a person who weighs 100kg on earth would only weigh 38kg on Mars.

  • Venus’s days are longer than its years.

  • In Space you would become taller as gravity is not present to push you downwards.

  • You cannot cry very well in Space as your tears won’t fall.

  • The Apollo 11 crew of Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were the first humans to reach the moon. Their Life Insurance was void during their trip.

  • We are moving through space at the rate of 530km per second.

  • Earth is the only planet not named after a God.

  • All the planets in our Solar System could fit inside Jupiter.

  • The highest mountain known to man is the Olympus Mons, which is located on Mars and is 3 times higher than Mt Everest.

  • The International Space Station is the largest manned object ever sent into space with 6 people on-board.

  • The ISS takes 90 minutes to orbit the earth, meaning the astronauts on-board see 16 sunrises every single day.

  • The number of stars in the Milky Way is ‘uncountable’. It is estimated there are somewhere between 200,000,000,000 and 400,000,000,000.  Our Sun is just one of these stars.
