Take a walk on the wild side

Conservation Week kicks off tomorrow and this year's theme is "Discover the world where you live". If you live in beautiful Rotorua, there's an amazing world right on your doorstep!
Here at Skyline Rotorua, we're encouraging our visitors to take the opportunity to enjoy Mt Ngongotaha’s native flora and fauna by exploring our interactive nature trails. Discover hidden treasures such as our "Weta Hotels" - safe, dark, moist habitats we've built for large cave weta to live.
These native critters access their "hotel" via back panels and visitors can open the front door and look inside, catching a rare glimpse of a weta’s dwelling. It's a great way for kids to learn about this amazing creature that can only be found in New Zealand. Weta are an ancient species - they've outlived the dinosaurs!
Our trails also include a number of other special features, such as looking-holes that highlight Rotorua’s well-known landmarks.
More than 15,000 native trees have been planted on-site at Skyline Rotorua, and we have installed feeding troughs in the trees to encourage birdlife to the area. We have also created a wetland from storm water run-off and recycled paper.
We look forward to celebrating Rotorua's natural beauty with you! Learn more about Conservation Week on the Department of Conservation website.
